The history of our motherland and the Apostolic Orthodox Church of Georgia, without exaggeration, represents a shared journey throughout the modern era. Over the centuries, numerous honorable high priests and deacons of the Georgian Church have distinguished themselves through exceptional work, many ending their lives heroically as martyrs, sacrificing themselves for the welfare and future of their homeland and church, joining the heavenly ranks of heroes and martyrs.
Among these eminent figures who met heroic ends, Metropolitan Varlaam (Makharadze) of Kutatel-Gaenateli holds a special place from a historical perspective. He was one of the prominent high priests of the Apostolic Orthodox Church of Georgia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Metropolitan Varlaam’s ministry began during the colonial rule of the Russian Empire in Georgia and continued through the Soviet annexation of Georgia. Throughout, Reverend Varlaam tirelessly served God, the Church, and the country with unwavering dedication and principle, maintaining the highest standards in his words and actions. Tragically, he fell victim to Soviet repression in 1937, and his final resting place remains unknown.
In 2023, we marked 150 years since the birth and 80 years since the death of Metropolitan Varlaam of Kutatel-Gaenateli, according to official records.
